I think I enjoy it turtoedove because, by actually telling the story through historical figures, we can see Turtledove at his best, when he is flawlessly taking what we know and giving it an intelligent new spin.

The series is an attempt at a sort of overarching epic that spans ish years of alternate history, and is as far as I know unique in the genre for its reach and popularity. If I didn’t already have a pretty solid grasp of Civil War history, I could have almost sworn I was reading a historical narrative. We’ll publish them on our site once we’ve reviewed them. Overall, it’s worth reading, but it does become somewhat arduous when the main story rmain essentially over. It disturbs the flow of the story and just feels skeezy. But the Civil War still isn’t something I’ve studied too terribly closely, which may be a shame, but then again may not be, as far as my ability to appreciate what Harry Turtledove has achieved in this founding document of his sprawling alternate history of North America, the remwin point for which is the aforementioned recovery of Lee’s invasion plan.
